Even on the calmest day, we can look out and see that the ocean is in constant motion. Wind blowing over the surface of the water creates waves or, more correctly, “swells”. These waves contain tremendous energy, most of which is released when the waves reach shallow water. Wave energy technology such as CETO™ harnesses this energy and converts it to electricity.
Wave energy is a much more consistent and concentrated resource than either solar or wind energy. Unlike solar energy, energy produced by waves can be captured day and night. Waves retain their energy long after the winds that created them have subsided. Even on a dark, breeze-less night, there is an ocean swell. Unlike solar and wind, the ocean swell can be accurately predicted several days in advance. Critically for Bermuda, wave energy does not compete for limited land resources.
